Haku is a four-piece indie-pop band from Osaka that formed in 2019 after meeting as freshmen at a vocational school.  Their earliest songs embrace melancholic twee with elements of surf, jangle pop and bossa nova, but over the years they’ve diversified their sound—even welcoming a side that likes to ROCK OUT.

The viral MONO NO AWARE cover brought hundreds of thousands of new fans from around the world.  Haku made subsequent videos foreigner friendly with subtitles in multiple languages.  However, they decided not to milk the overwhelming popularity of a single video or to expedite another viral hit.  Instead, Haku plan to go about business as usual, create the best songs they can and build further success organically.

Having finished vocational school, the members of Haku can now concentrate on developing their prowess as musicians.  In a recent interview, each member expressed the importance and urgency of honing their skills and learning new techniques.  The song「dedede」is their most technically challenging to date and shows how much the band has grown.

But one thing Haku already cherish and admire is Ai’s flair for songwriting. Ai is somewhat shy and introverted so she uses music to express her feelings and emotions. Her lyrics are beautiful and poetic but deeply personal and occasionally cryptic. The band respects her privacy but Ai is always open to explaining the lyrics if they ask. Ai’s lyrical poetry is truly the backbone that supports and inspires the band to do their best.
