Gaerea, a masked extreme metal band formed in 2016 in Porto,  a port city in northern Portugal, has released their fifth album, "Loss," their debut on Century Media Records, and is officially launching their activities with a global perspective. The five members, who maintain anonymity by dressing entirely in black, painting their arms, and etching their own emblems where their faces should be, have originally gained recognition for their black metal-based music.

"I think the new album has elements that both new and old fans will enjoy. However, their expectations don't necessarily align with the direction of the album," says the anonymous vocalist. He then reflects on their first album, "Unsettling Whispers" (2018), and their second album, "Limbo" (2020). "Certainly, up until 'Mirage' (2022), our style was a highly aggressive black metal like Watain, and we thought that one day we might be able to perform with Behemoth. Of course, we admire both bands, but we didn't intend to become the 'next Behemoth'; we wanted to be the 'next Gaerea'."

By wearing masks, Gaerea has revealed their inner selves, laid bare their souls, and gained the freedom to express what they want to do. Their latest work, 'Loss,' is an ambitious work that, while unexpected for fans, exudes an overwhelming sense of liberation and appeal.

From the grand opening track ¡ "Luminary," the members' attitude of pushing boundaries and creativity is clearly audible. The album features songs with catchy and passionate choruses, demonstrating an even broader range of music. £ "Hellbound" delves deeply into themes of guilt, heartbreak, and self-destruction, a song that attempts to overcome all kinds of pain and confusion. The fiery, passionate riffs that appear in the music video as a symbolic presence, and the vocals that deeply move the listener's heart, vividly capture the tension that lingers between vulnerability and aggression, between love and betrayal. From the dynamic ¦ "Cyclone" that supports the middle of the album, through the interlude-like § "LBRNTH" that invites you into its depths, the flow that cuts through the lingering emotions and leads to ¨ "Nomad," which anthemically depicts a wandering heart, is breathtaking. And then there is the dramatic elegy © "Stardust" that closes the album. The song, written based on the vocalist's experience of losing a close friend in his teens, is linked to the album's title, "Loss." This song, which helped him confront his own emotions that he had kept suppressed deep inside for a long time, concludes the work by releasing emotions and spreading quiet ripples. This work possesses an innovativeness that surpasses the previous work "Coma" (2024), which showed musical evolution. And it remains unmistakably the Gaerea sound.

From October to November 2025, the band accompanied Swedish labelmates Orbit Culture on their European tour alongside Atlas, delivering energetic and expressive performances as the main supporters.

The enigmatic Portuguese band Gaerea proves their unique identity with their beautiful yet powerful album, 'Loss'.
